Map the veterinary industry with four questions

25 October 2026 · 5 min

How big is the market? Who dominates it? And which smaller players are worth a closer look?

These questions come up in almost every market analysis. But before you can draw conclusions, you need to know what the figures actually count. Companies, legal entities and clinics are not the same thing.

Using the Swedish veterinary industry as an example, four questions show how you can build a first analysis base in your AI assistant with Sancera connected – and which limitations need to come along with it.

1. “How many veterinary businesses are there in Sweden?”

The list from Statistics Sweden's (SCB) business register covered 1,100 active legal entities with veterinary activities as their main industry on 24 October 2026. Sole traders are not included in this dataset.

So this is not a count of clinics. One company can run several practices, and a clinic can belong to a company with a different main industry.

For a first company mapping, the list is useful. Counting physical clinics requires a different dataset. That distinction needs to be clear from the very first answer.

2. “How large is the industry's business, and how profitable is it?”

In SCB's Structural Business Statistics, the veterinary industry comprised 1,455 enterprises and 5,977 full-time employees in 2024. Production value was SEK 8.9 billion and value added SEK 5.7 billion.

The operating margin was 13.2 per cent, compared with 13.6 per cent in 2023 and 14.7 per cent in 2022.

That gives a first picture of the industry's size and profitability trend. But production value should not simply be described as customers' total spending on veterinary care, and the industry margin says nothing about how profitable an individual company is.

Why 1,455 enterprises here and 1,100 in the register selection? The datasets refer to different points in time and populations. The structural statistics also include sole proprietorships, while the register list above covers legal entities. The counts should therefore not be used to calculate how much the industry has grown or shrunk.

3. “Who are the largest players?”

The register selection contains six organisations with at least 100 employees:

  • Evidensia Sverige AB: 2,000–2,999.
  • AniCura Sweden AB: 1,000–1,499.
  • Statens veterinärmedicinska anstalt (National Veterinary Institute): 200–499.
  • Blå Stjärnans Djursjukhus AB: 200–499.
  • Mälaren Hästklinik AB: 100–199.
  • Hallands Djursjukhus AB: 100–199.

The list gives a first picture of the largest employers in the selection. It is not, however, a ranking of market shares: employee numbers are given in ranges, the data refer to each legal entity, and a government agency appears among the companies.

For a commercial market map, the players therefore need to be categorised and their group affiliation checked. A company's registered office also needs to be separated from where the business is actually carried out. A nationwide player should not be placed in a single local market based on its registered municipality.

4. “Which smaller players should we look into more closely?”

The register selection contains 27 limited companies with 20–49 employees, including Djurakuten i Stor-Stockholm and Våxtorps Djurklinik.

That is a manageable list for further analysis. With company registration numbers, size class, registered office and address in Excel, you can start sorting the companies and adding to the dataset.

The next questions are more commercial: Which ones are already part of a chain? Which animals and treatments do they work with? How many clinics do they run? What do revenue, profitability and ownership look like?

From register extract to analysis base

The four questions provide a first structure: a company selection, the industry's economic development, the largest organisations and a list of smaller players to investigate further.

The dataset can then be supplemented with annual accounts, ownership and information about the individual businesses. The company registration number becomes the link between the register list and the further company analysis.

This is where Sancera fits in. The service connects your AI assistant to official statistics and public data from 100+ sources, including SCB, the Swedish Companies Registration Office (Bolagsverket) and Eurostat. You can work with source data in the same conversation as the analysis, with source references and the option to export to Excel or CSV.

The value lies in shortening the path from question to a dataset you can review and build on. You still need to assess the selection, check comparability and separate source data from your own calculations and conclusions.

The register list is the start of the market map. The analysis is what makes it useful.

Next time you need to map an industry, start with four questions: How many players are there? What do the industry's finances look like? Who is largest? And which ones do you want to look into more closely?

Then ask for the dataset in Excel – with source, period and scope.
